Nurse: H- hey! What are you doing?!
Louwrens: Sorry ... I just want that pal of yours over there to give me a little time to think ...

Nurse: I think, my friend, you misunderstand your position!
Louwrens: ?

Nurse: ... I'm expendable ...
Louwrens: ... oh.

[NOTE: A better translation for "vervangbaar" is "replaceable," but I didn't want to mess up the quote]

Well that didn't work out!

Nah, 'expendable' is the correct translation, no matter what the direct literal meaning is. It's what an English-speaker would actually say.

I wouldn't say I was expendable... Naturally, I don't give two hoots about being shot at since I'd have stomped his foot and grabbed for his pendular parts so as to maneuver him as a human shield the minute he pulled out the box cutter. Or, alternatively, I'd just tell the guard to shoot him.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not suicidal, but one would assume an officer has some firing range precision standard that has to be met in order to keep his job.

I'd sooner tell Lawrence if he doesn't let me go right now I'm going to shove a pitchfork up his @$$. And, I could do it too... just not with the immediately available resources. Although, I'm told the 1000 years of death technique has a similar effect.

@GabrielsThoughts: You've had time to think about it though and you're on the other end of a screen. She's an untrained nurse with a knife to her throat.

I still wouldn't say I was expendable even if I was. Civilians supposedly outrank soldiers and guardsmen anyway as their job is to protect the innocent. Why do you think there is a drive to protect the medic, merchant, or noble in video game missions?

Also I think a doctor is like 1 in 80 persons and a nurse is 1 in 25 in the population average. And, that doesn't even specify what kind of doctor. It could include everything from a witchdoctor to a college professor...

Although, I doubt the latter (as in all professors) are real doctors unless they have medical knowledge, and even then it is a broad category that includes everything from allopathy to homeopathy. So, maybe 1 in 200 are professionally trained medical doctors or general practitioners.

I think I looked up the statistics while I was watching Falling Skies (turner broadcast TV Series like 'V') two years ago because this actually came up in conversation about social ranking for a 'what if extra terrestrials attacked' discussion. Because in America we clearly spend our free time debating who's more important or powerful in conversations about television shows featuring refugee survivalist guerillas durring post apocalyptic scenarios.

@GabrielsThoughts: I think you're overanalyzing this.
