?: Hey there, son! Do you know this place? We've gotten kind of lost ...
Louwrens: Sure, mister!
?: We're trying to get to Wonderboom* ...

Louwrens: OK, so ... we're here ... just follow this street and turn left in the main street ... after Builder's Warehouse, just turn right and follow Voortrekker** over the mountain, and then you're basically there!
?: ... thanks ...
Louwrens: I hope you come all right!*** Drive safely!

?(2): We will ... but you're coming along!
Louwrens: Who ... / (thinks) Why do I feel ... so tire-

*: Wonderboom. Not a miraculous explosion, but a large tree; an area in/near Pretoria is named after it.

**: Voortrekker Road. It may have been renamed a few weeks ago, come to think of it. Either way, the directions Louwrens is giving make actual sense if you're starting from a side street south of Ben Swart, which has probably also been renamed while I was in the Cape. I'll need to go back to Pretoria and check.

***: "I hope you come all right!" Common in South African English. Literally translated from an Afrikaans sentence meaning "I hope you'll manage," but can't as easily be misunderstood as being condescending.

American strategies for roadside assistance... And the moral of the story is, never approach a stranger unless there are 3 to 1 odds in your favor in hostile or unknown territory... That's just commons sense. Unless you have a cell phone... in which case you don't wait for somebody to provide assistance, you just leave, you've already done your part by contacting the authorities. If you have no cell phone ignore the person and walk away... if they shoot at you jump. If they chase or approach you (with intent to do harm) turn around punch them in the gut and knock the wind out of them, if male, kick them in the jewels afterwards.

Not sure if these strategies would apply in the bible belt, but then again everyone in that part of the country probably has a gun. Whereas everyone on the west coast fancies themselves a genius.

@GabrielsThoughts: Indeed. Louwrens is a bit too trusting for his own good when caught off-guard. When it comes to the Jane situation, he can think on his feet a lot better because he's been considering it for a while ... but when something like this happens out of the blue, common sense is something he has little of, unfortunately for him. "But he looked so friendly ..."
